CMS Established New Medicare Speciality code for Hospitalist

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has established a new physician specialty code for Hospitalist. The new code for Hospitalist is C6. Effective April 1, 2017, a new physician specialty code for hospitalist will be. The new physician specialty code C6 has been designated for hospitalist.

The new code, C6, will allow hospitalists to self-designate their specialty on the Medicare enrollment application (CMS-855I or CMS-855O), or in the Internet-based Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System.

CMS has approved a dedicated new medicare speciality billing code for hospitalist, according to The Hospitalist, the official publication of the Society of Apr 19, 2017. The long wait for the introduction of the C6 hospitalist specialty code has ended. If you are a Provider, Hospital or hospitalist administrator this April 1, 2017. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) assigned a new specialty code, “C6”, for when hospitalists enroll or update enrollment.

CMS uses these Medicare physician specialty codes, which describe the specific types of medicine that physicians (and certain other suppliers) practice, for programmatic and claims processing purposes.

Medicare will recognise the code as a valid speciality for the following:

• Ordering and certifying Part B clinical laboratory and imaging, durable medical equipment and Part A home health agency claim.
• Critical Access Hospital (CAH) Method II Attending and Rendering claims
• Attending, operating, or other physician or non-physician practitioner listed on CAH claims
